Warning: Spoiler Alert
Last time we saw “THE BOYS,” back in mid-February, Dean Winchester killed Cain with the First Blade, Sam and Castiel, worried about Dean’s state of mind, as well as how much control The Mark Of Cain had on the elder Winchester brother. Unfortunately, “Supernatural,” returned from hiatus with yet, another one-off episode and yet another appearance this season from Cole Trenton, the Iraq War veteran that tracked down Dean, a few months back, to avenge Winchester killing Trenton’s dad, when Cole was still a boy. Trenton became a monster himself in this installment, but ended the episode with a far kinder fate than his father had.
A graphic tells us we’re in Fayetteville, North Carolina and we see a young woman suspended upside down from the ceiling, with duct-tape over her mouth, while her arms and legs are bound, regaining consciousness. She begins screaming, then we see a man stomp over to her, carrying a white-industrial bucket, slits her throat and as the blood pours from her neck into the bucket, the man grabs handfuls of her blood and starts drinking it.
Sam and Dean are in The Men Of Letters headquarters, Sam’s surfing the web for lore on Cain and The Mark, Dean enters the room and Sam closes the laptop, making the older brother think Sam checked out porn-sites. He shows Sam the headline about the woman’s death in Fayetteville and take a road trip.
The brothers arrive at the Fayetteville Municipal Building and the sheriff tells them they know who killed the woman a Special Forces Officer Rick Willis, recently returned from deployment. After he killed the woman he swallowed a ton of gasoline, then lit himself on fire, his dog tags were found next to his victim’s body.
Sam and Dean head to Rick’s widow Beth, who says that her husband came back from his latest mission, changed somehow. She then tells them that Willis couldn’t get enough water, he drank from the garden hose and even the bathwater, his skin also got dried out and started bleeding. She then tells them that her friend’s Jemma Verson’s husband Kit was on the same mission with Rick and he’s acted odd as well.
Jemma tells them Kit’s been out all night and he’s also been having an insatiable thirst for water. The brothers leave the house, finding Cole Trenton standing near their car, he’s Kit’s childhood friend and Jemma called him in to help, he insists on going along with them, to insure that Kit’s not their latest kill.
Cole gets them video of their last mission, they attempted to rescue an American Major from a cemetery in Iraq. They find the soldier and he attacks them both, the mission failed and official word’s Major Jones died from his Iraqi guard’s gunfire.
Things aren’t going well for Kit, as he bursts into a gas-station mini-mart and starts chugging down bottled water, two clerks inside, one decides to play hero and tell the man with the bleeding face he must pay for the water before drinking. He then knocks the bottle out of Kit’s hand and Verson, smashes a wine bottle, slitting the clerk’s throat and lapping his blood off the floor.
Sam gets an alert about the incident at the mini-mart and Cole and the brothers head to the store, Trenton’s shaking his head in shock when her hears Vernon lapped the blood off the floor. Just then his cellphone rings, it’s Jemma asking if Kit killed the clerk, Cole says he doesn’t know. She tells him about his father’s hunting cabin up north and he might be there. Trenton has Sam and Dean drop him off at Jemma’s, supposedly to stay with her and wait for Kit. But he gets in his Jeep and heads to the cabin, with Dean and Sam trailing him.
Cole gets to the cabin and finds Kit and Vernon attacks him and this worm like creature goes from his throat and into Trenton’s mouth and he swallows it. He’s about to deposit another one down Cole’s throat when “THE BOYS,” knock him off Trenton, the worm scurries across the floor and Dean stamps on it. Vernon overpowers the pair and takes off. Cole told them he swallowed the worm.
Sam and Dean say the thing inside Trenton’s a con-worm, a parasite that first craves water then blood, they were able to rid one victim of the creature by electrocuting him, Cole says that sounds good to him. Sam takes off looking for Rick, as Dean prepares to hook Cole up to, two car batteries.
Dean zaps him four times, on the fourth Trenton’s heart seizes and Winchester brings him back from the dead. They decide to dehydrate the worm, in hopes it would leave Cole’s body, then build a fire in the fireplace and don’t allow Trenton any liquids.
Kit goes home where Jemma finds him and he tries to put a con-worm down her throat, but Sam shows up and cracks Vernon over the head with a lead-glass vase, knocking him out. He then explains to Jemma that he and Dean are Hunters and Kit’s no longer the man she knows, he’s now a monster.
Cole’s skin starts to bleed and he asks Dean to tie him to a chair, but he catches Winchester off guard, attacks him and tries drinking some water. Dean quickly recovers, knocks the bottle away and puts a gun to Trenton’s head, then tells him they’re not giving in, Coles going to fight with all his strength, for his wife and baby.
Vernon wakens and slips his bonds, then shuts the lights off in the house. He again attacks Jemma, but Sam grabs him from behind, the two struggle on the floor as Sam tries to grab his pistol inches from his hand. While Sam’s going for the gun, Kit’s trying to give Sam his own con-worm.
Cole attacks Dean again and Dean puts the gun against the soldier’s temple and begs him not to make him use it. Suddenly the worm starts going up Trenton’s throat and leaves his body from his mouth, while Dean stomps it to death.
Dean calls Sam and tells him to get Kit to the cabin, but his younger brother says it’s too late. We see Jemma cradling Rick’s dead body, with a bullet in his forehead. Sam had no choice and it was a righteous kill, however he doesn’t see it that way, he just thinks he blew the situation.
For the first time in a while, Dean tries to comfort Sam, he says not to beat himself over losing Kit. Sam says he can’t help feeling he could have saved Vernon. Dean says sometimes you can do everything right and still the guy dies.
The Story Continues Next Wednesday at 9:00 pm on The CW.
