Warning: Spoiler Alert

The CW series “Supernatural,” came out of the gates in its return episode, like Dean’s 1967 Impala, firing on all eight-cylinders, as it cruised down the road.  No fan could ask where’s the beef in this episode, as every moment counted in the show’s return to the airwaves. In a season that took a while to find its footing, the series finds itself on solid ground and things appear to get even better over the next few weeks, including the return of a fan favorite in the next episode.

The opening scene finds Crowley in a hallway in Hell being hunted by his advisors, who each step out of the blackness and start stabbing the King Of Hell, until he falls to the ground. The blades going deeper into his skin with every thrust, he starts screaming and he starts to get that electrified appearance demon’s get just before they’re destroyed, when he wakes from his nightmare. Rowena’s sitting right next to her son asking him if he’s alright and Crowley quickly shakes it off and starts giving instructions to his assistant Guthrie, who appeared in the dream. Why would a demon, that doesn’t require sleep, have a nightmare? We find out when Crowley and Guthrie leave the room and Rowena pulls out a hex-bag.

Dean’s sitting in his room, on the edge of his bed reliving the slaughter he caused in the last episode, as well as the dream he had that mirrored the incident before he killed anyone. Sam and Castiel are talking downstairs and Cas complains that Claire’s barely talking to him. She blames the Angel for wearing her father’s body, whose died and gone to heaven and hates Dean for killing the man she and other teens stayed with, Randy. Although Randy used Claire for his purposes, he was kind to her, something she’d missed for years.

Sam says that he and Dean had killed before, but this was and before he completed his sentence, Dean interrupted and said it was a massacre. He was a hunter, but crossed the line and now he’s a stone cold killer. He says to Castiel, he needs to rid himself of the mark and tells the Angel to burn it or cut it off, Cas replies that just because the mark leaves his body the effects don’t leave with it. He then says he may have an idea.

Back in Hell, Rowena’s snooping around Crowley’s room when Guthrie catches her, she says she’s looking for food, what she gets served is garbage. Guthrie says he doesn’t eat and at that point Crowley returns. Rowena tries to plant some seeds of doubt about Guthrie’s loyalty, but Crowley dismisses them.

Castiel’s at a children’s playground standing by the sandbox, when he asks a young female Angel, who looked like she just came from a Sex Pistol’s concert, if she’s heard of any delay. She says she just guards the door and then we see light and mist come from the sandbox and three figures appear. There are two female Angels and a prisoner, whose instantly recognizable. Castiel’s friend the Angel Ingrid, tells Cas she granted his request putting herself in jeopardy. She needs the prisoner back and intact and Castiel agrees to the terms.

As the Angels return to Heaven, Cas removes the hood and of course it’s the most evil Angel, this side of Satan, Metatron. He says to Castiel, I told you I’d get out of jail and Cas reminds him it’s a temporary state. Metatron realizes, that Castiel got a renewal of grace and asks if that’s why he got summoned, but Cas says this isn’t about him. They get to Castiel’s car and Sam pops out and says hello and Metatron thinks Sam’s going to kill him.

They get Metatron into a room that negates his power and Sam ties him up to a chair with chains and a lock. He then asks Metatron what he knows about removing the Mark Of Cain from Dean’s arm. Metatron’s momentarily confused as he believes he killed Dean in last season’s season finale. He asks if Dean’s a demon and Sam says that he’s not.

Metatron then asks what exactly is Dean, he didn’t kill a human did he and he realizes his guess was spot-on, by the expression on Sam’s face. He laughs wildly then says he went nuclear, he’s totally a foaming at the mouth, balls to the wall, maniac. Sam says that the scribe’s going to help them because he killed Sam’s brother. Then Dean enters and he’s not a happy camper.

They return from the break and Sam asks him if Metatron can help and he says he might and Dean’s in no mood for games, he says to Sam to Hell with the Mark, lets just kill him. Metatron tells him to lighten up and says to Sam, boy he’s a mess. Sam asks if he can help them remove the mark from Dean and the scribe asks if that’s the end of the social hour and Sam tells him yes, and now it’s time for our featured speaker, that’s you and we get to ask the questions. Dean then gets in Metatron’s face and says he gets to cut the answers out of him.

The scribe asks Dean why he assumes Metatron won’t cooperate and Sam replies because he’s a “dick-wad,” and Metatron responds, yeah, but he’s their “dick-wad.” He says he has a special place in his non-heart for them and he’s willing to help them out. However the first thing they need’s the First Blade.

Claire’s left Castiel and she’s in a poolroom playing with a man and woman, who look like they’re in their twenties and rather sleazy. Claire’s cellphone keeps ringing as Cas keeps calling but she refuses to take the calls. The woman asks why doesn’t Claire just pick up the phone and scream and Claire says that’s not her style. The woman says that nice, doesn’t seem like it’s working.

Crowley and Rowena are arguing about her abandoning him as a child when his cell phone rings and he says hello squirrel, meaning Dean’s on the other end. He asks where they want to meet and says he’ll see them soon. He tells Rowena that he’s got an important meeting about a state issue and she asks if he wants her to have dinner ready when he returns. Crowley says she doesn’t cook and he doesn’t eat, then leaves.

As soon as Crowley takes off, she grabs one of his ties and cuts a slice of, she then creates a potion that transports her mind to her son’s meeting with the Winchesters. Crowley thinks they’re crazy, letting Dean anywhere near the First Blade, but Sam says this is a good situation for Crowley, without the mark, the First Blade’s useless. Dean tells him it’s a win/win. He then says the First Blade’s hidden in his crypt in Guam and hearing that she returns to her body.

Rowena summons Guthrie saying she’s got a message from Crowley for him and he questions why Crowley didn’t contact him directly? Rowena gives Guthrie instructions and directions to get the First Blade and return it to her. When he returns, he says he’ll only give it to Crowley, she kills Guthrie, just when Crowley returns. She makes herself the victim saying Guthrie plotted behind his back, then tried to attack her so she acted in self-defense. Crowley doesn’t question his mother’s account.

Cas drops by to talk to Dean about the oldest Winchester brother, talking to Claire. Dean says he’s the last person she’d want to speak to now and Castiel, says that’s why it’ll work, as it’s one screwed-up human-being talking to another. He says that Claire’s filled with rage right now and maybe Dean can tell her how to deal with it, Winchester agrees and Castiel says he’ll text Dean the number. He then says he loves texting, all the little emoticons.

Claire gets the message from Dean while she’s at the trailer where the guy and girl live and the woman suggests, they take care of Dean for Claire, they could beat him up. Then the guy says, or something more appropriate. So she says she arrange a meet.

Crowley calls Dean and tells him he’s holding the First Blade, and he’ll hold onto it until the time it’s needed. Dean hangs up the phone and goes into the room with Metatron. He tells him he’s got the First Blade, the scribe asks does he mean on him? Dean says he’s keeping quiet, now what’s the next step. Metatron says, this is where it gets interesting. He’s been lonely sitting in the room and been thinking about how important getting the Mark off of Dean is, and how much Dean needs Metatron. So the first tip was free, but all future steps are going to cost Dean and there’s a lot of steps. Dean remains silent, pulls his Demon/Angel killing blade out of the back of his pants, throws it on the table then goes and locks and latches the door to the room.

Metatron says what you doing slugger to Winchester, Dean gets in his face and says he’s going to get answers and they won’t cost him a dime. He says it’s time to settle the score and he goes through all the atrocities, Metatron’s committed. Stealing Castiel’s grace, locking the Angels out of Heaven, starting an Angel war, having Gadreel kill Kevin with Sam’s hands and killing him.

Metatron laughs at Dean giving him a lesson on morality, after all the people who trusted and believed in, who died. He says Dean could always justify it, because of the greater good, but lately it’s just killing people because Dean feels like it. Dean punches Metatron in the face and he tells Winchester, to go deeper and go darker. Dean hits him about eight times and Metatron says, that every time Dean commits violence the Mark Of Cain gets a firmer grip on him. He then says, if you think messing with humans and demons strengthens it, keep messing with the Scribe Of God.

We return and Metatron looks like he’s gone through a meat grinder. Dean says enough of the soft stuff and slices Metatron with the blade on his face and the Angel screams in pain. Dean then starts, slicing him down his throat and into his chest. Metatron’s finally scared and slips out “The River Will End At It’s Source.”

Right then Sam realizes Dean’s missing and he and Castiel head to the room Metatron’s imprisoned in. Sam tries to break it down, finally Castiel blows the door up with his powers. Sam pulls Dean off Metatron and Castiel checks on the Angel. Sam tells Dean he was killing Metatron, then Castiel says he needs to get the scribe back to Heaven, Sam promises, there won’t be further incidents, but Castiel refuses. Metatron says if his choice was helping Dean or death, he’d gladly choose death. He then screams to Dean it’s going to get much worse.

Dean gets cleaned up and meets Sam in the study and they talk about what went on earlier. Dean mentions the phrase “The River Will End At It’s Source,” that Metatron said just before Sam And Castiel burst into the room. Sam asks his brother if he recalls the powerful force Castiel said they needed? Well Cain’s lived with the Mark for years and he’s learned to control it. Perhaps a part of Dean wants to give in and the powerful force Cas mentioned is Dean learning to control it. (When Dean got the Mark Of Cain last season, Cain had retired years before.)

Dean’s phone rings and it’s Claire saying she’d like to hear his side of things and asks him to meet her at the trailer. When he pulls up, she’s watching from the window in the trailer and he sits down and waits on the park bench. The woman holds a baseball bat, while the guy’s got an axe and Claire comes out and screams. Dean quickly subdues them and has the axe raised over them when Claire screams no. Dean stops, his eyes clear then he picks back up the axe and destroys the park bench, inches from the couple. They run off terrified, Claire runs away out of shame and Dean just takes off.

A while later as Claire’s walking down the highway, Castiel pulls up and she asks how he found her. He says perhaps she wants to tell him something and after hemming and hawing she did. She said she’d try to improve herself and rid the monsters inside her. Castiel offers to help, but she says she needs to do this on her own. However, she’ll call him sometimes.

The Story Continues, Next Tuesday Night at 9:00 pm on The CW.
